Bruocsella Symphony Orchestra - conductor Jan Steenbrugge
Born in Ghent in 1977, Jan Steenbrugge began to play the violin at the age of 4 ½. From the age of 13, he became a member of the Flanders Youth Orchestra under the direction of Robert Groslot and also a member of the Belgian Youth Philharmonic.
He spent four years at the Boston Conservatoire from 1995 to 1999, when he studied conducting with Dr Peter Cokkies and violin with Zanaida Gillels. He was awarded a 'Bachelor of Music in violin Performance', Magna Cum Laudae, and was then invited to lead the second violins of the Boston Civic Orchestra. He followed violin master classes with Zakharn Bron, Gottfried Schnieder, Denes Zigmundi and Rudolf Werthen, and he took part in a master class with Keith Lockart and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He also took classes in singing, horn, percussion, acoustics, management and the legal aspects of the music industry. During the 2000-2001 season, he worked at the Flemish Opera as a stagiare on a production of Salome, then assistant on La Bohème. In 2001-2002, he was the assistant to Friedman Layer on a production of the Mastersingers of Nuremberg.
Today he is a student at the Brussels Royal Conservatoire, and studies violin with Mme Katalin Sebesteyan and conducting with Silveer Vanden Broek. Many orchestras have benefitted from his talent as a conductor: the Marlborough Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of the Brussels Royal Conservatoire and since June 2002 the Bruocsella Symphony Orchestra.
